CHAPTER 16

With no conscious decision to leave that monitoring post, I slipped into the corridor. Thinking quickly, I once more pushed the official signifiers of the establishment into my bag, grabbed my coat from it and yanked that on, then flipped the hood over my hair and forehead.

I’d expected there to be cops posted outside each room, but there weren’t. Yeah, I wouldn’t hang around this fucking basement if I didn’t have to, either. The first two doors were locked from the outside, but the third wasn’t, and as soon as a louder, different noise came from inside the room, I eased myself in.

The increased hubbub was because the dividers between each room were sliding back, leaving the separate cubicles as one open space. Right, the Iron Lady scientist had said that.

“What is going on?” yelled a tall guy as people clustered together in the middle. The movement would hopefully cover me as I sneaked into the room.

A couple of women swung around, but the movement of the huddle as a whole would conceal the fact they were turning to me. I didn’t want that; I wanted them to behave as normally as they could in this horrific situation and spread amongst themselves what I was about to tell them. At least the sound was off in here, the scientists not wanting to hear low-levels’ distress, which meant I could speak.

Rippling, a tactic we used in Thorn, was the fastest way to get information through a crowd. People passed it forward person to person, covering their mouths with their hands if they didn’t have anything over their faces to conceal them, like a game of telephone. I just had to be crafty and hope wires didn’t get crossed.

“Gonna ripple info,” I called. “Don’t look at me. This is about waves.”

The word was conveyed through the group. Kinesis. What this was all about.

“Don’t have any, moron,” the tall guy hissed.

But they did. I could feel it even now the stimulus was turned off. Oh, they might not have enough to make them kinetics, but everyone had some latent power. It was just the way things were, like having blood in our veins or breath in our lungs.

I thought back to what Arlen, Culhane’s father, had told me—that I was able to use others’ kinesis, but I hadn’t known because I’d grown up surrounded by hardly any. The have-nots, like these people all around me, with basic telekinesis, enough to get by, but not enough to make anything of themselves.

“Blast coming.” Okay, so whatever pulse the scientists had said they were going to release in this room was probably nothing like the sonic sirens and sound weapons the police used to control the population, but giving the warning was the best I could do.

“More?” a big woman asked, fear in her voice. She was still shaking and shivering. Oh, she’d been in the fourth room. The monitors had mentioned her.

“Yeah, but to wipe memories.”

No one responded. Ordinarily, a statement like that would
